WASHINGTON — If a doctor’s prescription has been filled, the medication might become more widely available. But that’s what many doctors say is wrong.
“I’ve never had it approved,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Health Research Group. “It’s a very important drug, but it’s not approved by the FDA,” he said.
Wolfe, a former health care official who was in New York City on an official health leave, has been one of the nation’s most trusted doctors for the last few decades.
The practice began in 1998, when a private company was accused of ordering a number of drugs on the black market, including Viagra and Cialis, in the United States. By the time the drug company bought the rights to sell the drugs, Pfizer had earned $1.3 billion in revenue.
The drug, known as “Viagra,” was approved by the FDA in March 2002. The drug had not been available since 2005. The drug’s manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, denies that it was approved, but it says it has since been available in New York City for more than a decade.
Wolfe has written several articles on the topic and said that he has received more than 1,000 requests from patients, physicians, and health care providers. He said that he is aware of multiple doctors who have received similar requests. The main reason is that they have a different opinion about the drug’s safety and efficacy.
“I’m very concerned about the public safety, and I’m concerned about the public health,” Wolfe said. “And I have a very good relationship with health care providers and patients.”
Wolfe also said that he would consider filing a lawsuit against the companies that made the drug, Pfizer. The lawsuit, a civil complaint filed by the Food and Drug Administration, has been filed by two women who claimed that Pfizer failed to warn consumers about the risk of dangerous side effects and that the company failed to adequately warn about the risk of harm to their unborn children.
Wolfe said that he would sue the companies in court, if he was not successful.
“I don’t want to go there. I don’t want to go there,” he said. “I don’t want the drug to be in a class of drugs.”
A bottle of Viagra is one of several products that can be sold in New York City to treat erectile dysfunction, including Viagra, a popular prescription medication.
Dr. Paul C. Lechleiter, a professor of medicine and family medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, said that while the drug is not FDA-approved, he said, it’s been available since 1998. He noted that in New York City, the drugmaker’s marketing plan for Viagra is to use its product as a marketing tool. But he said that the drugmaker is also using marketing to get people to prescribe Viagra. So far, the drugmaker has not issued any complaints about the drug. The company, which has not yet approved Viagra, declined to comment.

A Pfizer-funded study will offer a new hope to millions of women who are having to deal with the effects of low levels of sex hormones. A group of men who have tried Viagra — or a placebo — reported in January that they developed the symptoms of low sex drive. The study was funded by Pfizer, which said that it is not clear how much of the effect was due to low blood pressure or how the placebo worked.
The men in the study reported that they were not having any sexual activity at all, which is why their bodies were so hot — and the symptoms were so unpleasant that they would need to be hospitalized. But they were not having sex in that situation. The study showed that the men who took the placebo — which included the men in the study — had a reduced sex drive and symptoms of low blood pressure. They also reported that their symptoms were much worse in comparison with the men who took the placebo.
The men in the study reported that they were having sex in the same time as the men who took the placebo. However, the study did not show any improvement in symptoms of low blood pressure.
